Why does surface texture matter more for optical sensors than laser sensors?

Optical sensors need surface texture to see movement because they take microscopic photos of the surface, which require contrast to track. A cloth pad with visible weave works perfectly, but a glossy desk or glass surface acts like a mirror, causing the cursor to jump or stop. Laser sensors, found in most office mice, handle smooth surfaces better.
