Why do spring rains cause more flooding than summer storms?

Spring floods happen because the ground is hard and can’t absorb water — it’s frozen or compacted from winter, and snow melt leaves soil saturated. Spring rains are steady and prolonged, so water runs off instead of soaking in. In summer, the ground is dry and soft, so even intense storms get absorbed. That’s why flood warnings are worst in March and April.
