Why do composers fear writing a ninth symphony?

Beethoven’s Ninth was so massive and influential that it created the “curse of the ninth” — the superstition that a composer’s ninth symphony would be their last. Bruckner, Mahler, and Shostakovich all ran into it, whether they believed in it or not.
