Why did R.E.M. reject producer Stephen Hague?

R.E.M. rejected Stephen Hague because he was too perfectionist — he made the band perform multiple takes of ‘Catapult’ and added keyboard parts without their permission, which wasn’t what R.E.M. was looking for.
