Why did critics disagree so strongly about Merzbow's Pulse Demon?

The 2003 reissue split critics right down the middle: Pitchfork gave it an 8.7 and called it an ‘incomparable classic,’ while AllMusic gave it a measly 2.5/5. You either get Merzbow or you don’t.
