Who played the piccolo trumpet solo on "Penny Lane"?

David Mason, a session trumpeter for the London Symphony Orchestra, played it. Paul McCartney heard him playing Bach on TV and asked him to record the part at Abbey Road. Mason transposed McCartney’s humming into notation on the spot, creating one of pop music’s most recognizable brass moments.
