Use a 10-gauge extension cord only when running a powerful tool like a circular saw, compressor, or generator more than 50–75 feet from the outlet. For short runs under 50 feet with most home tools, 12-gauge or 14-gauge is fine. The thicker wire prevents voltage drop that can overheat or stall big motors.
