When should I test for phosphates in my pool?

Don’t test for phosphates unless you have persistent algae after balancing chlorine, pH, and alkalinity. Algae need low chlorine and poor circulation to grow, not just phosphates. If your chlorine is at 1–3 ppm, algae won’t grow regardless of phosphate levels. Testing and treating phosphates is often a waste of time and money pushed by pool stores.
