When should I replace my pool pump motor instead of repairing it?

Replace it when it starts screaming, grinding, or screeching (bad bearings), won’t hold prime, leaks from the shaft, or trips the breaker (winding short). If the motor is over five years old, just swap it—repairing an old motor is throwing money away. A new motor costs $150–$300, and if the housing is cracked or impeller chewed up, buy a whole new pump instead of piecing together a Franken-pump.
