What's the difference between certified refurbished and just "refurbished"?

Certified refurbished from iRobot or Shark usually includes a warranty — the manufacturer inspected it, fixed what was broken, and stands behind it. But “refurbished” is an unregulated term; some units are just returns with a wiped-down exterior sold as-is. Without a warranty, refurbished is just used.
