What type of mousepad base works best on rough wood?

Rubber. Look for a textured, grippy natural rubber or anti-slip base in the 3–5mm range with a stitched edge. Silicone wanders on uneven wood, and foam pads rock or slide. Rubber conforms to the irregularities and stays put.
