What should I use to clean a salt cell — vinegar or muriatic acid?

Use diluted muriatic acid, not vinegar. Vinegar is too weak for most pool scale. Mix one part muriatic acid with four parts water in a plastic bucket, submerge the cell for 10–15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Wear gloves and eye protection.
