What real-life event inspired the line "He blew his mind out in a car" in "A Day in the Life"?

The line came from a newspaper article about Tara Browne, a Guinness heir who died in 1966 when his Lotus Elan crashed. John Lennon read that he didn’t notice the traffic lights had changed and turned that into lyrics.
