What is the only real solution for hard pool water?

Drain and refill is the only real solution. Drain about 25-30% of the pool, refill, wait a day, test hardness, and repeat until it drops below 400 ppm (ideal is 200-300). Never drain more than halfway for vinyl or fiberglass, and check local ordinances before draining.
