What is the main reason a pool pump loses prime?

Air leaks on the suction side are the main reason. Air sneaks in before the water reaches the impeller, breaking the vacuum. Common causes include a dried-out pump lid O-ring, loose drain plug, failing shaft seal, or low pool water level below the skimmer.
