What is the best way to protect bulbs from rodents?

Wire mesh is the only reliable bulb protection. Scent repellents and cayenne pepper don’t work because rodents adapt fast. Plant bulbs inside wire mesh baskets or lay hardware cloth over the planting area before covering with soil. Mothballs and ultrasonic spikes are a waste of money.
