What horsepower pump do I need for a pool cover to handle heavy rain?

Go with at least a 1/3 HP pump rated for 2,000 GPH. For covers over 20x40 or tropical downpours, step up to 1/2 HP. Check the GPH rating at your actual head height, and get an automatic pump with a float switch.
