What gauge wire should I use for outdoor lighting?

14/3 works for nearly all outdoor lighting. It’s rated for 15 amps, and most setups like string lights or path lights pull only 3-4 amps. Only go up to 12/3 for very long runs over 100 feet or high-wattage floods.
