What gauge extension cord should I use for a 15-amp tool at 50 feet?

Use 12-gauge wire for a 15-amp tool if the run is over 25 feet. At 50 feet, 14-gauge might barely work but risks voltage drop, motor damage, or a tripped breaker. A too-thin cord makes the motor run hot and burn out faster. Don’t save twelve bucks on an extension cord.
