What extension cord should I use for Level 1 EV charging?
Get a 12-gauge outdoor extension cord rated for at least 25 feet. Level 1 charging pulls 12–16 amps continuously, so a 14-gauge “heavy duty” cord isn’t enough—it’ll overheat and cause problems. Make sure it’s marked “W” or “W-A” for outdoor use, has a molded weather-resistant plug, and fits your charger’s handle. Don’t coil it while charging, and inspect it regularly. Spend $30–40 on the right cord—it’ll last decades and save you headaches.
