What does the skimmer weir do in a pool?

The skimmer weir is a floating flap inside the skimmer that regulates water flow and traps debris. It creates a small waterfall effect to pull surface water and debris into the skimmer basket, and closes when the pump turns off to keep debris trapped. Without it, leaves float back out.
