What does cloudy water after shocking a pool mean?

It means the shock worked. The cloudiness is mostly dead algae particles floating around, or sometimes a temporary calcium cloud from high calcium hardness and calcium hypochlorite shock. Don’t panic — run the pump 24/7, clean or backwash the filter, and brush the pool. The cloud should clear in a day or two; adding more shock will make it worse.
