What causes a pool pump to lose prime?

Losing prime is almost always an air leak on the suction side between the skimmer and pump. Check the pump lid O-ring first—clean it, lube it with silicone pool lube, and reseat it. Also inspect for a cracked lid, bad valve gasket, low water level, or suction pipe leaks. Use a bucket of water to test joints while the pump runs.
