What are the downsides of retractable cord reels?

Voltage drop is a real downside, especially with long 16 or 14 gauge cords under high current loads like table saws or space heaters. Heat buildup from coiled wire when partially retracted is another risk, and cheap internal contacts can fail. For heavy tools, use a 12 gauge or thicker reel and always pull out the full length.
