Should I use bar oil or motor oil for my chainsaw?

Use bar oil. Motor oil works in a pinch but is thinner, flings off faster, and doesn’t stick to the chain, causing more wear and mess. Bar oil has tackifiers that keep it clinging to the chain at high RPMs. If you’re out of bar oil, finish the job with motor oil, then refill with real bar oil immediately.
