Power strip vs surge protector: Surge protectors actually protect your gear, power strips just give you more outlets

A power strip is just an extension cord with extra outlets, while a surge protector has MOVs inside to absorb voltage spikes. For sensitive electronics like computers or TVs, you need a proper surge protector rated at least 1000 joules with clamping voltage under 400V. Cheap “surge protectors” from the gas station won’t save your gear, and they wear out after a few years or big hits — replace them regularly and never daisy-chain them.
