Pool heat pump vs gas heater: Heat pump wins for regular use, gas for speed and cold weather

Heat pumps are slower but way cheaper to run — about a third of the fuel cost — and last 10–15 years vs 5–10 for gas. Gas heaters heat fast and work below 50°F, but cost more to operate and have a lower upfront price ($1,500–$2,500 vs $3,000–$5,000). Go heat pump unless you need quick heat or live in a cold climate.
