Optical sensors are more consistent on fabric surfaces, while laser sensors can get jittery on coarse weave cloth pads. Laser works better on glass or polished desks, but optical handles fine and coarse cloth textures without random cursor jumps. Unless you need to use a reflective surface, go with optical.
