Motor oil vs bar and chain oil: Motor oil works in a pinch but don't make it a habit

Motor oil is thinner and lacks tackifiers, so it flings off more, lubricates less, and wears the chain faster. It also runs hotter in the bar and doesn’t biodegrade, unlike bar oil. Use motor oil only for one emergency cut to get home, then switch back to proper bar oil.
