How was Tom Waits' debut album Closing Time received when it was first released?

Closing Time barely registered on release — it didn’t chart and got almost no attention from the press internationally. Hard to believe now, given that it holds “Ol’ 55” and the aching title track, but Waits hadn’t yet become the gravel-voiced cult icon we know today.
