How should I winterize my pool heater in a mild climate?

In areas that don’t freeze hard, just turn off the gas valve and put a weatherproof cover over the heater. Don’t drain or blow out lines—corrosion and critters are the real threats. For heat pumps, also disconnect the electrical and cover the disconnect box. Only drain if temps dip below 32°F for several days straight.
