How should I pre-chill a cooler before loading it?

Put a bag of ice in the cooler for an hour or two before loading. Ice absorbs heat as it melts, chilling the walls and lid so your real ice lasts longer. Don’t waste time air pre-chilling or sticking it in a freezer — that does almost nothing.
