How often should I replace my pool's sand filter?

Replace it every 5–7 years. Five years is safer for most residential pools; seven is the max. Sand doesn’t wear out like a cartridge—it just gets clogged with oils and scale. If you backwash regularly and deep clean occasionally, you might stretch it to ten. But if your pool stays cloudy after a good backwash, the sand is done.
