How often should I replace my pool filter sand?

Replace pool filter sand every five years, unless you notice problems sooner like cloudy water, low pressure after backwashing, or clumpy sand. Sand gets coated with oils and minerals over time, reducing its effectiveness, and channeling can let debris back into the pool. You can push it to seven years with clean water and good chemistry, but a $50 sand change is cheaper than fixing a green pool.
