How often should I inspect extension cords, and what signs of damage should I look for?

Inspect extension cords at least once a month, and definitely before heavy use with space heaters, power tools, or air conditioners. Look for frayed or exposed wire, cracked insulation near plugs, bent or broken prongs, discoloration or scorch marks, and cuts or nicks in the outer jacket. Also, toss it if it smells like burnt plastic or ozone. If you see any of these signs, buy a new cord — don’t tape or splice it.
