How often should I change my pool filter sand?

Change it every 5–7 years, but don’t just follow a calendar — replace it when the filter starts underperforming. Sand gets coated with oils and calcium over time, and channels form in the bed that let water bypass the dirt. If a sand cleaner doesn’t fix low pressure and cloudy water, new sand is cheap insurance.
