How far should I prune back roses?

Prune roses back to about 12 inches (a foot tall). Cut at a 45-degree angle above an outward-facing bud, remove dead or crossing canes, and keep 3–5 healthy canes. Do it after the last frost when buds swell. Roses thrive on hard pruning.
