How do robot vacuums learn and navigate different floors?

The vacuum uses sensors — lasers or cameras — to slowly map each floor on its first trip, saves that map, and then pulls up the right one automatically next time it cleans that level. First run is slow on purpose; every run after that is fast because it knows exactly where it is.
