How do I properly set the depth gauges on a chainsaw chain?

Use a dedicated depth gauge tool (flat file guide) and a flat file. Place the tool over the chain so the raker pokes through the slot, then file it flat with a smooth, level stroke—never angle it. Keep the rakers around 0.025″–0.030″ below the cutters (check your chain’s manual). A $10 guide tool and flat file prevent engine bogging and kickback.
