How do I keep my pool cover pump from sucking the cover into the intake?

Put a 12x12 inch piece of rigid foam insulation or a dense pool noodle slice under the pump. The foam floats, keeps the intake off the cover, and lets water flow underneath. A plastic milk crate works too.
