Rake the dead spots to break up the crust, scatter regular grass seed that matches your lawn, press it in for seed-to-soil contact, and water daily like a wrung-out sponge for two weeks. Do this in early spring when soil warms but weeds haven’t taken over. Skip fertilizer until you’ve mowed the new grass a couple times.
