How did The Low End Theory bridge jazz and hip-hop?

Q-Tip kept the production minimal — bass, drum breaks, and jazz samples — bridging jazz and hip-hop without a wasted sound. The whole thing was recorded on a Neve 8068 console that John Lennon had used.
