How did Pearl Jam form after Mother Love Bone's breakup?

After Mother Love Bone dissolved following Andrew Wood’s heroin overdose in 1990, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard started jamming with guitarist Mike McCready. They sent an instrumental demo to San Diego surfer Eddie Vedder, who wrote and recorded vocals over it sight unseen — and Pearl Jam was born from the ashes of tragedy.
