How did Eddie Vedder end up singing on "Hunger Strike"?

Chris Cornell was struggling with the vocals during practice when Vedder stepped in and sang half the song. Cornell later said Vedder sang it exactly the way he’d been hearing it in his head — just instinctively, on the first try.
