How can I test an extension cord for a broken wire without cutting it?

Grab a multimeter set to continuity mode. Access both ends of the cord – the prongs on the plug and the slots in the socket. Test each conductor by placing one probe on a prong and the other on the corresponding slot; a beep means the wire is continuous, silence means you found the break. Don’t plug the cord into a wall while testing.
