How can I make a cheap cooler hold ice all day?

Pre-chill the cooler by putting a bag of ice in it the night before, then dump it out and load it with cold drinks. Fill every gap with frozen water bottles or a towel, keep it in the shade, and avoid opening it too often. That alone doubles ice life for a day at the beach.
