How can I keep algae away from my pool without using a lot of chemicals?

Run your pump 8–12 hours a day in summer, cover the pool with a solar cover to block sunlight and debris, and use a phosphate remover to starve the algae. Keep chlorine at 1–3 ppm and shock only when needed.
