Glossy surfaces vs dark surfaces for mice: Optical needs light matte, laser needs matte but can handle more

Optical mice need texture and contrast — dark surfaces absorb the light, glossy surfaces blind the sensor. Laser mice track on more surfaces including glass, but mirror-finish pads cause jitter. Safest bet is a standard medium-gray cloth pad for both.
