Extension cords with surge protection vs standalone surge protectors: Standalone protectors are safer and more reliable

Extension cords with built-in surge protection are cheaply made with undersized MOVs and flimsy cases, making them less safe than standalone protectors. Standalone units have proper clamping voltage and joule ratings, sit at the outlet instead of mid-cord, and avoid voltage drop and heat buildup. For reach, use a plain heavy-duty cord; for protection, use a standalone surge protector at the outlet — don’t combine the two.
