Does a GFCI extension cord work on a non-GFCI outlet?

Yes. A GFCI extension cord has protection built into the plug end, so plugging it into any regular outlet protects everything downstream against ground faults. Just make sure it’s a real GFCI cord with test/reset buttons, not a surge protector, and test it monthly.
